This is just carrying on from the last topic. And springs to mind after talking with another castle buff on the phone the other (K)night.
That he is researching the subject of the Lady being in charge of the castle when the Lord is away.
I know of several but I was wondering if any of you had thoughts on where ladies had more than held their own when a castle was under attack/

As constable of the castle Nicola de la Haye was in charge of Lincoln when rebel barons and Louis, son of the French King Philip beseiged it in 1217.
She was the daughter of Baron de la Haye, hereditary castellan of Lincoln. She successfully defended the town against several rebel raids and was made sheriff of Lincolnshire in 1216.

I'm not sure this is what you need, but, anyway, this is the story:
Chiajna was the name of the queen of Walachia(lady in fact, the title of queen came to Romania in 1886). Her husband (Mircea the Shepard) died in 1559 and the noblemen formed an army and set to conquer Bucharest. Chiajna had a minor son, who was heir to the throne and she organised the royal army and set to defend the capital. She was defeated, returned to Bucharest, took her children and fled over the Danube. There, she got help fron the ottomans and returned to defeat her enemies. Anyway, happines didn't last long.
I thing she is the only example of fighting-queen of Romania.

All times are PT (US)
