I was wondering how storytelling was done in medieval time. A romanian folk story (The Children with golden hair) tells about how a nobleman gathered all the village to put pearls on golden strings (there must me a better way of phrasing this, only I can't thing of it. Perhaps it was like spinning on spindles, part of their duty to the noble). And while doing this, they told stories.
So, were stories told to entertain people while at work? Were there contests? I suppose the noble invited storytellers to the castle at fests. Were the only stories told at such ocasions on the lines of King-Arhur-and-The-Knights-of-the-round-table? Because, for some reason, I wouldn't tell Cinderella to a noble...

In medieval England there were professional storytellers called Raconteurs who would be employed to tell stories at feasts or banquets.
Indeed, story telling was very popular during the middle ages.
