It consists of a wood plank(unfortunately, the pictures aren't very good)on which the monk or nun bangs a wooden hammer to a certain rithm. It's said it keeps evil spirits away (sounds really nice, in fact). My question is, was there such thing in western monasteries? I'm particulary interested in monasteries in France.
