I've recently recieved my English Heritage handbook for this year and with it a diary of historic re-enactments at various English Heritage properties. I shall definitely being trying to get to the History in Action event on 12 and 13 August at Kirby Hall, Northampton. This is the big re-enactors event 3000 performers from 80 groups giving displays from 1st century Roman Army to World War Two (Tanks and a fighter fly past promised). However I also enjoy some of the smaller events. Last year I had a lovely afternoon at Kenilworth castle with some 14th century knights and another at Whitley court discussing the dyeing of cloth with some Confederate States of America soldiers.The fighter fly past promised this year reminds me of a visit to Tattershall Castle in Lincolnshire a couple of years ago. As I stood at the top of the great brick tower I became aware of a Spitfire and a Hurricane flying past at eye level, this wonderful demonstration last for a good half hour. I later found out that the Battle of Britain flight is housed at an airfield next to Tattershall and they were flight testing and rehearsing. It was so amazing to see these aircraft flying without having to stare upwards. ------------------

You can frequently have the same experience (without having to climb the tower)at Urquhart when the modern fighter pilots practice low level flying up the loch and 'play chases'. The drag as the water surface is pulled up behind them is spectacular, but not quite as a romantic a sight as either of the planes mentioned above. ------------------

The Historic Scotland Events brochure has been published for this year. It is packed with events to be staged all over the country throughout the year.
Highlghts include a re-enactment of the 1300 siege of Caerlaverock Castle by Edward 1. This is to take place on the 8th and 9th of July, free entry to 'Friends of Historic Scotland' (to all events). This is to be one of the largest re-enactments ever staged by HS, with some 200 combatants storming the walls.
Other highlghts include the Carrick 800 Battle Re-enactment Society at Bothwell Castle on 30th July, with demonstrations of musket firing, use of pikes, and a skirmish between Royalists and Covenanters.
The same company will be at Blackness on 6 August, with 'Wrath of the Vikings'.
