Has any one seen the new Lord of the Rings movie? How was it, did it live up to its name? |

I have! And yes it is great, I personally think it perfectly represents the book, although people who have not read it might have a lot of questions afterwards Some stuff is left out of course, but that isn't really disturbing, I think the worst thing is that they gave Arwen Glorfindel's role. (That was his name right? I read so many elven names I can't remember...)But as I said, it is definitly worth it. ------------------ -Matt- The world can be as you want, when you are as the world wants you. |

I loved it! During the whole three hours I didn't look down at my watch once so that's got to say something. As Peter Jackson commented, it's taken movie making this long to catch up with Tolkein's imagination and Jackson makes a valiant attempt. It's an amazing feat to film all three parts of the book simultaneously. Elijah Wood remarked that the months of filming became a life for the actors and that the fellowship became a reality which you notice in the film. The scenery of rural New Zealand is breathtaking and mysterious. As for the debate over Arwen's representation. As Jackson remarked, there are so few female characters in Tolkein's world that he wanted to emphasize the roles of those that did play a part. It's all a matter of reading between the lines I believe and making a film of course involves various degrees of interpretation. The only criticism I have is the representation of the elvish city of Lothlorien which I thought was quite dark. Whereas when I read the book I remembered Lothlorien as being one of the lightest sections. Indeed I had friends who hadn't read the book asking me during the movie if the elves here were good or bad. What do others think? |

Well, on the whole I found the Elves good, but in my opinion not "Elfish" enough. In my view Galadriel and elrond should be more kind then they appeared in the movie, and the elves skin looked more like stone than like a beautiful Elf... just my opinion PS, the forum now almost has 1500 members, stuff goes fast ------------------ -Matt- The world can be as you want, when you are as the world wants you. |

Yes, I'd have to agree with your comment about Elrond and Galadriel. Elrond, in particular, seemed to be quite aggressive in character. Perhaps this was a way of showing the distance the elves now want from the goings on of mortal creatures. Interesting that you thought they looked like stone. Perhaps this was also a way of showing that their time was waning. Either that or their skin care products are waning. |
