Muncaster Castle on the West Coast
Welcome to the EDGE Guide to Muncaster Castle. To the East of Raven glass village and above the River Esk, this ancient castle has remained in the same family, the Penningtons, since l208.
It has something of a reputation for being haunted. A popular tourist attraction, especially in June/July when the famous rhododendrons are in bloom. There is also a bird sanctuary.
The oldest part of the castle as it stands is the pele tower of circa 1325. Much building work has been carried out over the centuries, some to the design of the well known architect Anthony Salvin.
The castle has not suffered in the way most in the county have, it is too far off the beaten track for the Scots to consider, and it escaped trouble during the Civil War .
The result is a lack of an interesting history such as some other castles
have but, importantly it has survived intact (apart from improvements made),
over the years.
