Lindsay Hello everyone!
I'm new here, but I really need your help! I'm 15 years old and my parents really want to build a castle. There anniversary is on Nov. 5, and i would like to draw up some rough plans for their castle to give to them on their anniversary (as you can see, I'm starting plenty early, so I can do some research and really have an indepth and well planned out floorplan). What I need from you, basically, is how to go about this. i really need to know, how to plan out a castle that looks old but has the comforts of modern life (my mom would like it if she could have things like huge cooking pits, but have a stove tucked away some where). Also, it would be of great help if I knew the best method of drawing it out (i.e. should I use graph paper, or what ^^;;; )
I noticed that a lot of you here have built your own castle. How did you go about planning it out?
Any help at all would be really appreciated! Thanks

duncan As a start, find out what rooms are needed and their sizes. This will help you with the outside walls.
What will your parents like in a new home? A Built in stove, a hot tub, walk in closets? How many bed rooms? Knowing about these type of items will help you draw the plans. On the market are templets that come in different scales such as 1/4 = 1 foot, ect. for household items and doors or windows. You can start with graph paper or simply a crude sketch. It's up to you.
By castle do you mean a real one or a house that looks like one, or a movie type?
On this site are lots of castle photos and ideas, good luck on your project.
Highlander There are also some computer programs for sale ($20 to $50) for home design. Also, here are a couple of good reference books:
'Castles of Britain' by Patrick Cormack, and 'Castles of Britain and Ireland' by Plantagenet Somerset Fry. Check with the library. Both these books have some great photos, and the latter has some ground floor plans of historic castles. Good Luck!
Lindsay To answer your question duncan, my parents, mom in particluar, really want it it be as authentic as possible, so it would definately have to be a real one
