dps_10011 I am new to this site, and I would like to start out by saying that I am really impressed with what I have seen so far. I have always dreamed of building my own castle, but always felt that I was "alone in the world" with this dream. It is wonderfull to see that I am not, and it is inspirational to see that there are actually people doing it.
I am interested in hearing more about your experiences in building your own castles (what materials you are using, where you are building, what kind of budget you are using...). In considering my own plans, it would be great to have a realistic frame work.
Also, any recomendations on land. I am on the east coast of U.S. and would like to stay here, but I don't want to pay a fortune. Ideally I would like 25+acres. any suggs?

In this forum your find many people are useing as many different methods of building as can be thought of. From straw bales to solid rock walls and every thing in between. Some methods are better on a tight budget then others and there are plans that can be built for the price of a new house. Some are makeing an existing house look like a castle. And a extremly few makeing their castles in the old ways of construction {Stone and Lime}.
As for the land in NY, your have to go to someone in your home state for help with that.
Your frame work for a budget comes first from knowing what kind of construction your be useing, building type, and availabily of materials.
To get an idea of how much your be spending,
will you be building a tower house, a castle of Enceinte, something of a later period, or a Castle look alike?
Will your walls be of true castle thickness or of a modern house?
Have you looked into the price of building materials, their transport costs, wages, insurence for your workers and the cost of land in your state?
Not trying to talk you out of your dream, but letting you know these are only some of the things to consider as you start to plan. Ever one here will help in what ever ways we can and i hope to answer your questions as they come along.

matthewburton dps, I too am new to this site and I am interested in building a castle. But I am having the same problems estimating cost and time involved. I have figured out that the best place to start out is to research everything. Then you will begin to form your own opinion of what you want to build. duncan The last time i spoke with them they were useing straw bales for load bearing walls.
Have a look in the past posts for other ideas as to what you might want to build.
