FrostleafHail Everyone. I am the founder of Frostleaf Productions, and am interested in A. Building a Very Large Castle. Its got to be able to accomodate a Hotel, Convention center, Battlefield, Reniasance Fair in the Courtyard, as well as have cooking and other rooms to support 30 constant occupants. The hotel i wouldnt mind being a separate medieval fassioned inn inside the castle walls. Mainly i want this place large enough for about 10,000 occupants to be able to be in at once....and about 200 occupants to spend the night at the beginning until its necesary to expand. I would love to get ideas from everyone interested...so please write back thanks.

Erik SchmidtHi Keenan, interesting project.
Firstly, for your information, and this has been discussed in other parts of the forum, true castles of the period up to the late 15th century were not really great places to live, which is why, when the castle became mostly obsolete as a military defence system in the 15th-16th century they were often abandoned or greatly altered. I would suggest that you emulate the later form into which castles were transformed, in the 16th century and after, but you must realize that these are not true castles, their defensive function mostly being abandoned in favour of comfort and opulence.

OK. Questions.
Are you building on flat land or on a hill?
What period are you aiming for? Medieval or renniasance (I presume the latter)?
Do you mean you want your convention centre to be able to house 10,000 people at once, or just the castle grounds within the walls?
I pressume by 'battlefield' you mean a display area for tournament and battle reenactment. Will you be wanting the area to be visible to spectators? How many, up to 10,000?
My ideas will depend to some extent on the answers to the questions above.

One more thing. Medieval inns were, to my knowledge, not placed within the walls of castles. They would have been relatively small and unsuitable as an inspiration for a large hotel. I would suggest using the main buildings of the castle as the hotel section.

duncanWe don't do commercial applications of construction here.

FrostleafWell as for your questions ....

A. its mostly flat land with some hills in the area but nothing that would alter the construction.
B. renniasance is what id prefer.
C. 10,000 people within the castle walls and maybe like 3,000 in the great hall(which as for construction and other purposes would be created in sections...)
D. battlefield spectators is a yes.
E. about 2,000 spectators at the fight
F. The medieval inn would be outside the castle. Yes there will be some differences then what people believe or know what a castle is...I am looking to make it more comfortable then tactical. Kinda like a lords Home. But also there will be some defensive and strategic planning in the castle as to have sets when i work on the movie that is plan to make after graduating from college.

and Duncan....This isnt a commercial castle...more rather its a dream ive had since i was a kid to own my own company...and its just that i want to run my company out of the home i want to build. its not that the castle IS my compnay....just a place where its working out of. Im more doing this for my own aspirations then anything. I just might as well share it with others in teh process. Well thanks everyone for the replies helped alot.....now i just got to find a contractor to get a design and a materials list and labor...

(PS...I just thought it was funny but my ancestor i was told was once a king of ireland...if anyone knows where i cna get really reliable and good information on that i would love to hear from you thanks)

duncanI should have learned along time ago not to get into a rush while i wrote a post.
So heres the long and the short of it about this one.

From the first i instituted a policy for good reasons to not have discussions about commercial adventures in this forum.
It never has been about not having construction conversation on the projects them selfs, Heaven forbid, after all this is the forum for that!
So if your project is a commercial enterprise there is no need for a member to mention that part and for something the size of the one above it diffently will have to be just to cover the bills.
You can tell us the size of it, and what the requirements will be, ask about types of construction methods, ect.
In general construction talk.
That after all was what brought me here in the first place.
Perhaps you could insert different words, like huge, massive, humongous, the size of a small country, instead of saying the hotel will hold umpteen hundred people at one time and every one will have a bath room instead of having to yell "guard a loo"!*.......... or something to that extant.
I'm very interested in hearing what the members have planned and how you will make your project into a reality one day.
So don't let my 'gruff in a hurry gotta write quick' posts stop you from writing.
We all have jobs, and for me a company to run plus a 'rather large' castle under construction takes a lot of my time.
Thanks for listening and i wish every one the best at fulfilling their dreams.

Erik SchmidtAre you a multi, multimillionare?
With those plans you will need to be.

It is difficult to give you much advice because you are dreaming up a project more akin to a modern superstructure than a castle.
The great hall alone, having to hold 3,000 people, is far removed from anything that existed in period. Even the grandest cathedrals would be hard pressed to hold this many people standing.
Whether you create it in sections or not, it will not be able to be built with period roof designs, the span would simply be too great.

By aiming for the renaissance as your period, you either go for a palace or an altered castle. But neither are really suitable for your needs.
The castle could have the defensive aspects 'retained', but could not be built large enough without it losing much of the impression of being a castle.
The palace could have the size, although you would still have the problem of the great hall, but there would be no logical reason to have castle defenses incorporated into the design. You could have cannon defenses constructed around the perimeter, in the typical style of the 16th-18th century, but it bears no relation to a castle.

I would suggest you don't rely on a contractor to come up with a design. If you are seriuos about such a project, spend some(lots of) time researching what you really want visually and functionally and then spend a small amount of your millions to work with an architect and engineering firm to come up with a workable plan.

Erik
