Does any one know if there exists a good book about castles (an maybe mansions) of Switzerland (or of its individual cantons), which is still available. I know there exists a map for sale of Switzerland with all the castles, but i would like to know if there is a book or even better books. Thx in advance just type in your subject country ie. well on the moment Vers les plus beaux châteaux des Alpes has come on mine wish list of castle books i want about Switzerland. http://www.glenatlivres.com/livres/vers_les_plus_beaux_chateaux_des_alpes.html On the moment mine budget is an little bit small, i have just bought (or buying) some nice books like: England's Thousand Best Houses by Simon Jenkins (great book, a must have) Die burgen des luxemburger landes (for christmas ) the book about castles of luxemburg, it has two volumes, one 420 pages and one of 200 pages and it weighs about 5kg Details about book on http://www.burgen.ch/buecher/bu-bu2.htm and you can buy the book via http://webplaza.pt.lu/public/boursch/documents/Annonce.htm Monumente der Weltkulturen. Burgen und Schlösser Europas von oben. (for sinterklaas, a dutch version of santa on december 5th) and two books about disappeared palaces: one about the weilburg palace in baden near Vienna, Austria and Hannover - Der höfische Bereich Herrenhausen. (also for sinterklaas ) As I think you understand german, theres one good book that includes most castles: BITTERLI-WALDVOGEL, Thomas. Schweizer Burgenführer, mit Einschluss des Fürstentums Liechtenstein. Basel/Berlin 1995. You'll find a lot more information if you go to the swiss-section of http://www.burgenwelt.de where you also find a long text of mine about the castle-history of Switzerland including a list of the most useful books. If you have any questions or need more detailed information about any swiss castles, just name it... Merlin [This message has been edited by Merlin (edited 10-27-2003).] yes, german is no problem for me, it is a native tongue for me as far as it concerns reading just like english. The books looks good, it is only a little bit difficult to get (not only at www.amazon.de): Thomas Bitterli As for Chillon, there are some very good older books in the libraries. Something newer you could try to find: DUPLAIN, Georges. Chillon Schritt für Schritt. Veytaux, Association du Château de Chillon, 1988. (also available in french) well i probably will buy one day Vers les plus beaux châteaux des Alpes to have a good book about swiss castlesipflo hi Levan No idea if any of these are any good as my language skills are not quite up-to-scratch, but here's a bibliography:
http://www.swisscastles.ch/bibliographie.html Peter Hi Ipflo;
just had a look for you.
Go to; www.abebooks.co.uk
Switzerland, this will give you about 60,000 references !
In the 'refined search, subject' type in Castles, this will give about 90. Some good stuff in there. May get one myself.
Some dealers are not too far from you.
Let me know how you get on.
Pete.ipflo thx for the info

Another and more detailed list of mine you'll find in this older post: http://www.castlesontheweb.com/quest/Forum10/HTML/000066.html ipflo thx for the info

Do you know if there is nice book about Chillon?Merlin Hmm, the 'Schweizer Burgenführer' is still available in many bookstores here in Switzerland. I think you could buy it also directly from the author, who is the sercretary of the Swiss Castles Association (Burgenverein):
Blochmonterstrasse 22
CH-4054 Basel
info@burgenverein.chipflo thx, i have just sent the email ipflo I have received today the answer from the author, unfortunately it isn't avalaible any more. A pity, you can't always have luck Merlin That's life...
Sorry. I'm afraid there's no newer publication about medieval swiss castles in general that is any good. ipflo yeah, that's part of the 'hunt' for castle books. Merlin That may be the right thing to do if you're mainly interested - as the title says - in beaux châteaux (beautyful castles). I for my part love all those castle-ruins standing on high rocks - so very characteristic for the alpine regions of my country... ipflo Well I like both to be honest. There is nothing beautifuler than to walk one or two hours through woods and than arrive at the top of a hill or mountain being in old forgotten castleruin with a beautiful view over its surroundings. *thinking back to last year in the alsace and the pfalz and long years ago in the alps when i was very small *
