PeterWhat books did I get for Xmas ?
Having just done a giant review from Steve Sneyd on 'Timber Castles' for the next Postern. I was glad to see the hint was taken. And it appeared in my stocking. Why I haven't had this on my pressie list before, I don't know! More on it later.
The other was;
Welsh Castles at War, John Norris.
Started reading this one first ... hm!
When I am told that 'Ewloe' was built by the Normans, I start to have a few doubts.
At £20 (the first £30) for a paperback, I want something informative. Not BIG clangers in the first few pages.
We shall cary on and see.

PaulHello Peter, I read Welsh Castles at War earlier this year and what a fine read it was too.
Highly recommended.

Paul.

castleukHi Peter
I got the Inventory of Ancient Monuments in Glamorgan, volume III part Ib, The later castles and volume III part II, Medieval non-defensive secular monuments, nice big books, just full of info, looking forward to checking some of the sites out, in the new year.
Yours Chris

PeterCheers Paul, will stick with it and see what else we can spot!

On the Glamorgan series, I think mine is Vol. lll .. part 1a, the early castles. And they are excellent though expensive.
Must admit I treated myself to the last of five of a series of massive tomes from Italy. These are on the castles of Piemonte. Also a couple of mini-booklets from the same guy. Postage was a bit nasty, but it was Xmas.
Anyone interested can look at Enzo Bussi's site at ... www.astilibri.it
On with the typing .. gotta mag to finish.
Peter

ipfloWell this December month I did not really get 'real' castle books, but still some very good books: The Regency country houses from the archives of country life, and Schlösser im Fünfseenland about castles and country houses around Lake Starnberg (to the south west of Munich, Germany). Both book are highly recommendable. Also there was a small booklet about the lost castle of Königsberg (Unsterbliches Königsberger Schloss. Zehn Essays), which is very interesting for the ones who are crazy about lost castles.

MariaI got Masterpieces of Illumination, from Taschen. To my great regret, there aren't (or I haven't been able to find) any good romanian books on castles. Got some really nice medieval city maps reproductions, though...
ipfloI know that book, it is really beautiful, but that is it most of the time with books of Taschen . It has beautiful pictures of old manuscripts.
PeterSounds like most of us made sure our Xmas also had some good reading material.
Re; Welsh Castles at War, I think Mr. Norris has been very lazy. He keeps refering to sites in North Wales as 'Clwyd'. When it has been Flintshire for a long time now. A very lazy approach.
Peter
