A few common myths; Defenders poured boiling oil on attackers. Castles have deep damp dungeons. ------------------Rowan Hi! I was wondering if anyone out there would happen to have a blueprint of a castle. And, specifically, if anyone out there can EMAIL me specific info on medieval castles. For example, give me a list of "No, no's" or tell me the truth about any medieval misconceptions most people may carry about castles. THNX, Rowan
PS. My EMAIL address is going to be changed in about two weeks. If you can't find me under locouno_2002@yahoo then please try
RavenMoon@yahoo. And if that doesn't work, then it's my fault and I am not worthy of the info you tried to send me!
Philip Davis See my website for a sample of floorplans of several English and Welsh medieval castles of different types at http://www.castlesontheweb.com/members/philipdavis/floorplans/FPintro.html . For information on medieval castles your first stop should be the Castles of Wales, there is a link on the above page.
Castles are made of stone.
Most castles were made of earth and wood. These castles can be found in many places in europe but are normally eroded mounds of earth which take much imagination to see in their original glory. Some of the stone castles have survived and it is these that capture the modern imagination. There were rather more castles than most people imagine,
over 500 in Wales, about 1500 in England, 5500 in Germany and Austria.
Oil was expensive in northern europe and anyway would have burnt wood or cracked stone walls. Defenders would have thrown stones, quicklime and **** for sure and possibly hot sand or boiling water.
A few larger castles (and many bishops' castles) had specific prison cells, which are occassional below ground level but are usually at ground level. Most castles had ground floor cellars which could be used as prisons if necessary but were generally for storing food. Below ground level chambers or cellars are rare in British castles.
Neurotics build castles in the air, psychotics live in them,
Psychiatrists charge the rent, art therapists do the interior design
and nurses clean out the garderobes!
Tritoph As Rowan was asking, would someone email me about blueprints and 'no nos'. My email is Tritoph@aol.com. Thanks!
