nicfreI am a drafting designer who currently uses Pro-Engineer, a 3D design software program. As a hobby, I am interested in designing a 3D complete layout of a small castle or fortification. The time period is not really important, but earlier periods would be best. The smaller the better for simplicity. I want to be very exact, and if anyone has any ideas, I would be very interested to attempt this project. Any information on period styles and specific architectural features (with approximate sizes) would be greatly appreciated. I know this is a huge undertaking, but I love the creative aspects of designing and I wish to combine that with my love of castles. Thank you for your time!
AJRThere are a number of floorplans in the Photo Archive under the "Castle Floorplans" category. If none are suitable, let us know. I have almost 200 castle floorplans on file, and other moderators also have various floorplans available. Let us know if there is any particular castle you want plans for.
Erik SchmidtA friend of mine is currently doing a 3D model of Dover, I'm not sure what the software is though.
Good idea to pick a smaller castle though.
Would you prefer one with natural stone or neatly cut stone(or brick) walls? Do you want it to have a keep and other internal buildings or just an empty space within the walls?
A symmetrical castle or one with complex angles and levels such as is found in hilltop castles?
Let us know.

Erik

GordonThere is a collection of floorplans and elevations with some detailed drawings on my web page, linked below.

nicfreThanks for the replies! Probably a type of finished brick would be the easiest for my first attempt at castle construction. I would like to construct a castle keep without internal buildings for starters. I am thinking the best would be a symetrical castle with maybe four corner towers with a draw bridge. For the first attempt at constructing a castle, I would like to keep it fairly standard. If I am successfull, I would like to try more complex castles.
Erik SchmidtYou seem to have missunderstood the keep. The keep IS an internal building(except for shell keeps) and is surrounded by walls and usually seperate from them.
The low countries (around Holland in particular) tended to have brick castles and also Eastern Europe to some extent. England and the low countries are probably best for symmetrical castles.

Check this site for Dutch castles, http://www.castles.nl/
I'm sure you can ask him for floorplans if you see one you like.

I can't think of a good one off hand, but I'll let you know if I find one.

Erik
