chocolate My grand-dad was a master mason, and just wondering if it did run in the family, and did one of my relateions help built a castle.
wurdsmiff In early times trades certainly did run in the family, fathers teaching sons, however if you want to know the answer to your question you would have to ask your family, since that is a specific question for them.
It also depends on whether you are referring to the trade or the masonic lodge, since this is a title they also use for some senior members.

don't know if you are still interested, but if Burgess is your name, which I take it is.
For you there was one William Burgess, Mason.
Known work 1456-1472, to the Bishops of Winchester at Farnham Castle. All his known work was on that castle. All you have to do now is trace your name back, to see if they came from that area.
But as 'Burgess' also means citizen, Borough freeman, one who has gained the freedom of the Borough. You would have a job on your hands.
