agraves I'll post info here as well. Any buffs ever hear of a castle in Lecce, Italy owned by the Basurto family. I heard it is still there , but in ruins. Any info on family or castle? We're talking about 1825. Thanks my knowledgeable friends! Peter Hi,
there is a Castle in Lecce, but this dates from (I think) the mid 1500's. There are also many sites around the area.
Checking my Italian data base I can direct you to www.pugliaturisimo.com/aptlecce/inglese/architetture.html where you will see what you are up against.
Basurto can also be found at; www.anet.it/giuggianello/storia where they are mentioned as one of Counts of the area.
Don't forget, in Italia many places were known as 'Casaforte', a strong house. This has been corrupted into castle. So you may not be looking for a castle as such. Having visited a view in the north they are nothing to be sniffed at. Being strongs than many so called castles.
Will see what else turns up.
The name also has connections in Mexico !

I do have relatives in northern Ialy who said that they visited the castle and refered to it as such, but I don't know. My Italian relatives live with history all the time. I , however, had to be content listening to stories of the old country growing up in the U.S.. I guess that is what spurred my interest in Geneaolgy and makes me want to know more. I believe that the castle was in the Basurto family for generations. It is only in 1825 that my great -great grandmother was born there. Her father was a duke. Anyway, I went on the internet and the name Basurto did bring up a lot of Mexican replies. I found out, however,that there is a Spanish Town in spain called Basurto, and since spain ruled Lecce for generations, this makes sense. Also, the Kingdom of Two Scilies, and the Spainish kings were related. I don't know how or if at all my relatives fit in, but it is interesting. Your responses have always been a pleasure to me. You will find on the left a 'find your name in Italy' site. Now, although this doesn't actually point you to where you can find the name, it does give you the % of where you can find it.
A bright red is high density, and a pale yellow a low. Try it and see where the Basurto name crops up !Peter Perhaps another contact for you !

Silly me! I didn't even see till today in back messages that you said there was a Count in that area named Basurto. Where did you get that information? Unfortunately, I can't understand Italian, so that site in Italian is Greek to me. I did do a surname search of the country,however, and the results were perfect. Almost no Basurtos in Italy, but there are five of them in Lecce. I am going to write to them and hope one of them writes English! I do have a picture of my great-grand father (whose father was Austrian), and he looks very Slavic, but now I understand his mother "the Basurto side", must have had some Spainish ancestry. I know her castle or "whatever" is there in Lecce because my deceased Aunt once saw it. I am hoping through my correspondence to pick up some info. As usual you have been a Pearl!

I couldn't access some of the links you provided- the castle link and the Italian page link ( the one you said mentioned the name Count Basurto!! ) Oh well, I am not giving up. My great grand uncle in northern Italy wrote me, he said he had been to the castle of my ancestors and that it is in Sanarica (Lecce). Does anyone know of a castle there? Would a castafore be refered to as castle even if he visited it? I have new information about the duke. His first name was Ferdinando. His wife's maiden name was Martini, and she was also a duchess, I don't know if this was through marriage or as a result of marriage. Thanks for any info on a castle in Sanarica. I did find a site that listed over 20 castles in the Lecce\Bari\Taranto region, each with a small write up. The one in the town you mentioned was not there. I can only presume that this was a minor site, and perhaps converted to a 'Caseforte' before its demise.
Sanarica is only mentioned through a Salentina web site, which does give it a page with very brief info.
The place has less than 4,000 souls, one of the main Piazza is 'Piazza Martini'. The crest of the town is actually shown as a castle. I have e-mailed one of the local tourist web sites for you ,, but if they answer is another thing. graves http://www.salento2000.com/castelli_del_salento.htm
Peter, Since I don't understand Italian, I apologize. This website listing was for the castelli del salento, and refered to Basurto, but your saying castelli del salento means it is a site of all the castles of salento , and not the name of a basurto castle. However, why does it mention that the "structure" is in Racale, not Sanarica? ( at first I thought this was the name of the castle, but now I gather it is the region.) I appreciate all your work and interest. I am willing to let this die a quiet death. I am just curious. ciao charlotte
