Casey DeansMy mom has traced our family(Deans) back to when my great(4x) grandfather who came over from Scottland. I have been told that the Deans was a part of the Davidson Clan and was trying to find out if this is true. I have read some history on the Davidson Clan and some of the surnames they used were Dean and Deane, the site said they didn't have enough space to type all the possible surnames down. Does anybody know of anyone that I can contact to help me in my search.
wurdsmiffThere are a variety of sources of the name. One family of Dean, later Deans claims to have originated from a family of Davidsons who for a while used both names. There was also a large collection of Deans around the Hawick area of the borders in the 16thc.
However other sources include the many place names of Dean, or Deans. The best known is Deans in Kilmarnock which has a grand castle of the Boyd Earls of Kilmarnock.
There is also a Deans in Aberdeenshire, and one in Edinburgh, where once was a large mansion/fortified house of a family of that name. So a variety of possible sources.
For specific family history, ie tracing the geneologies of individuals from Scotland go to http://www.origins.net/GRO
It costs, not expensive but since you're doing your own searching it can mount up.
