flowerHello
I am really interested in my family history. My grandma lived in Holand around 40 years ago. She told me there is a castle in Holland called Berkel En Rodenrijs. This castle has supposedly been in our family history. It is very important to me to know about this castle. A village lies in a place called Berkel En Rodenrijs, so I'm guessing that this castle should be in the area. Please can you tell me if there is a castle called Berkel En Roednrijs, and maybe a bit about the castle. This would be very important to me. The message I saw on the web site said I should say how old I am. Well I am 16.
Thankyou
-Melissa
MarkoMelissa,

Berkel en Rodenrijs is a little village just a couple of kilometers north of Rotterdam (where I live) and I don't know of any castle there. Also no mention of the name in any of my books. The nearest castle is Castle Huis ten Berghe in Hillegersberg (this lies between Berkel en Rodenrijs and Rotterdam) of which I have a page on my website at http://www.castles.nl/hill/hill.html but this has been in ruins since 1426.
Maybe your family name could give some clues?

Marko

PeterMarko,
sorry to say I hadn't looked at your site before .. but I have now !
Excellent, seeing that I know very little about castle in your country.
I'll make sure that I will see them all over the next few weeks .
flowerThankyou for that information Marko.
In case you have forgotern what my letter said it was about my family history, and about Berkel En Rodenrijs.
You see My Oma's (grandma) was married to a man called Luke Rodenrijs. As you can see Rodenrijs is in the name of the town - Berkel en Rodenrijs. I was just wanting to find out if the castle belonged to someone in my family. I don't know if that gives you more of a lead, but I hope it does. I just was thinking wouldn't it be great if I owned a castle!
Thankyou
-Melissa Hollander
PeterFlower.
Have checked the name for you, and it is not restricted to the one town.
It also goes back as far as the 13th century !
Will let you know more when I have it.
Fox Atreideshey Marko, didn;t know you were Dutch too!
Very nice, but no metion in my books either...

MarkoYep, I'm a real Dutch cheesehead!

And flower, sorry but a more extensive search for a castle or other building connected to a Rodenrijs family member didn't bring up anything. The following link however leads to a site about the history of Berkel en Rodenrijs. According to the site the name Rodenrijs shows up in that village around 1156 and is a name originating in the Zuid-Holland province. Maybe the webmaster could give some more info. The url is http://www.hber.myweb.nl/portzhindex.htm
