------------------Kathy I believe my ancestors came from Hayton (or the de Hayton Castle). Is there anywhere I can look for parish records or information regarding the Hayton Family? My earliest
ancestor shows up about 1745 in Virginia, USA. I can't tell if he came from
England or perhaps his father..both are named John Hayton.

> Kathy Hayton CramerGordon There is no guarantee that your family owned a castle with which they shared their name. This is the most common falacy we come across when dealing with geneologists from the States.
Family surnames which indicate place names or even castle names, may mean simply that the originator of the name came from that place, and may have no further connection to the castle. To prove that they did, you have to track back individuals, and establish by record searches that they had a connection with the castle.
Example, I live in Drumsagard. If this was the middle ages, and I went to stay in Glasgow, I might become known as Gordon from Drumsagard. After a while the 'from' might be dropped. If the 'from' was 'of' in the form of 'de' it might indicate ownership or a leasehold of the property.
There are at least two parishes of Hayton in England, one in Cumbria, and one in Yorkshire. You might find these links helpful.
