Doc Grauberger Greetings,
I hope that someone out there can help me in my search for photographic and factual information to aid in an upcoming design I am working on for my theater’s production of the “Lion In Winter”. This play is based on the chaotic relationship King Henry II of England had with his wife and sons, at his longtime home the Castle Chinon. To be sure, I could easily create a set that looked like any generic castle interior, and the audience would be most likely satisfied, but I wished to do more than that and try to be a bit more accurate in my portrayal. However, this has turned out to be more of a challenge than I thought, and alas the research that my staff and I have done so far has come up short of being anything I can work with.
So far I can only find a few scant pictures taken from a distance of the three castles that make up this site, and none from the inside of the ruins that would give me a better feel for the style of construction. Plus I find conflicting reports which state that they were completed before King Henry II’s reign, or that site was mostly developed in his day, or yet again that most of it was completed by later residents. One would think that there would be more to be found on the castle that Henry II briefly imprisoned his rebellious family including John Lackland, and Richard the Lionhearted. As well as being a one time prison for the Knights Templars and the site where Jeanne d’Arc met with the Dauphin - Charles VII, before heading to Orlean with her troops.
The three castles that make up the site known as the Castle Chinon, are the Chateau (or Fort) de St. Georges, the Chateau du Milieu, and the Chateau du Coudray. The site is located in France’s Loire River Valley. Any information on web sites, books, or even old photos from your Aunt Edna’s tour of Europe would be appreciated. I am designing the rough structure of the set now, but I do have a couple months and several other prior shows to go before I construct it and add the details.
