BellamyLooking for information pertaining to a Shropshire Castle that was given to the Robert de Belasme around 1066 by William the Conqueror. Belesme was the 3rd Earl of Shrewsbury. Maybe the same as Acton Burnell?
Philip DavisActon Burnell Castle is a fortified manor house (Actually it's not very fortified at all, it has a few decorative battlements). It was built circa 1280 by Robert Burnell, Chancellor of England and Bishop of Bath and Wells. The castle has no links with Robert de Bellême, although the manor of Acton may have been held by him at an earlier date.

As 3rd earl of Shrewsbury Robert de Bellême had many castles(1) in England and Wales, however he did not become earl until 1098 by which time William the Bastard was dead and not in a position to give him anything. Robert gained his surname from his mother Mabel but his title, lands and castles from his father Roger of Montgomery who was granted the earldom of Shrewsbury in 1071. A brief account of Robert is given in The Oxford History of England: Domesday to Magna Carta 1087-1216 by A.L. Poole, this should give you a start as where to find further sources.

(1) Notable castles held by Robert de Bellême include Arundel, Tickhill, Bridgenorth and Shrewsbury
