The castle at one time belonged to Alexander Balliol. It was destroyed in 1212 during the upheavals in King John's reign which led to the signing of Magna Carta in 1215. It belonged to Robert FitzWalter at that time. For a better history of the castle I suggest you go to your main local library and ask if they have a Victoria County History for Hertfordshire. The Victoria County Histories are being written as an on-going project which aims eventually to cover all the counties of England. The series is incomplete but it is the best starting point for local history. The articles these books contain are written by academics who base their work on original research.
Mark_208 Does anyone know anything about this castle, hardly anyone even knows of its existence. It is very local to my home and I would like to know more.
Geoff All I can find amongst general castle books is this: Andrew Knight Main References.
RCHM - Hertfordshire - p 51-2
Medieval Castles in Herfordshire - Derek Renn - p 14
The Castles of England - Sir James D Mackenzie - Vol 1 - p 126-7.
