DanellaI was wondering if anyone could help me out with information on Kinnaird Castle in Scotland. Also, I was told that my family had a castle in Scotland also called Blackhall after their name. I can't find anything about this castle. I don`t even know if it exists or not. I sure hope someone can help me out or get me started in the right direction to get information on these castles. I really appreciate any help anyone can give!
wurdsmiffGo to my website(see profile) for location of Blackhall Manor, it was a property of the Stewart family from 1396, and the present house was built by Stewart of Ardgowan in the 16th century. After many years of decay, the house was renovated in the 1980's and the work was carried out with commendable care and attention to detail. It remains occupied. It is of two storeys and an attic, is a rectangular block with centrally projecting small square stair tower.
Kinnaird is a tall, rectangular and well preserved 15th century keep of 4 storeys and gabled garret within the battlement. It was a property of the family who bore the same name, descended from Randolph Rufus who resided there from the 1170's. There was a 13th century castle of which nothing remains. In 1449 the Colville family took over, one of whom brought on the wrath of the Earl of Angus by killing one John Auchinleck. The Earl spoiled the estate and sacked the castle. James 6th visited in 1617, and in 1674 it passed to the Thriepland family. It was abandoned and became a ruin until renovated in 1885. The Thrieplands regained it and it remains a private home. It is 9 miles north of Perth at Kinnaird.

wurdsmiffAn afterthought, your family name is Blackhall. Often such surnames derive from the place of origin of the progenitor of the family,(rather than the place being named after the family- as with Hamilton,) e.g. the John of Auchinleck mentioned before was probably derived from a Boswell of Auchinleck, and often these lairds were addressed by the name of their property. It is possible that your name derives from a Stewart of Blackhall, and they later became of Ardgowan and Blackhall, and then also of Inverkip. The family then became the Schaw-Stewarts. This is educated supposition, though I'm not aware of another Blackhall with early origins in Scotland. Another well known example is that of the Lindsays of Crawford who originated Crawford as a surname, and there are many more.
wurdsmiffThere is also Kinnaird Head Castle, near Fraserburgh, go to http://www.scotland2000.com/weeguides/castles/102.htm
