RiggsSend a tourist to your favorite castle! This is my first trip to Europe and I'll be visiting lots of musuems and getting the 'real' experience instead of following a bunch of groups in tour busses. I got a list of armour museums already, but are there some castles that shouldn't be missed?
Planned already are; Windsor, Edinburgh, Dover, Alnwick, Caernarvon, Eilean Donan, Tower of London, Rhein river valley castles, and some in Italy and Spain that I wrote down but can't remember off the top of my head.
duncanThis is a place to start. I'm sure with alot more replys forth comeing as we have new moderaters and the first ones will want to add their new favorites to the list. http://www.castlesontheweb.com/quest/Forum12/HTML/000117.html

Philip DavisIf your already going to Caernarfon then you should also include Conwy and Beaumaris,
Between London and Dover are Leeds and Rochester
Around Alnwick are a whole bunch of worthwhile castles (see A Kingdom of Castles)
Also worth a visit is Warwick and nearby Kenilworth

MerlinIf you move from the Rhine to Italy, don't forget to take a break in Bellinzona (if you cross the Alps by train or by car via the Gotthard-tunnel). The place has a system of 3 big castles, connected to each other by long walls and controlling the entire valley. It's the largest medieval fortress of the Alps, part of the UN-world cultural heritage and well worth a visit:

Philip DavisI toured Spain a few years ago and went to several lovely castles. Segovia's Alcazar is fine, although the town and the Roman aquaduct impressed me more. The town walls of Avila are sublime. Loarre is one of my favourite castles in the world. Coca (Is there a decent web site for Coca?) is one of the most distinctive castles in Spain, mudejar architecture at it's best. I spent only four weeks in Spain and saw but a fraction of that countries wonderful castles which includes some of the most complete and unspoilt in Europe.

wurdsmiffIf you're going to do Edinburgh, try Craigmillar, Tantallon and Dirleton too.
Eilan Donan may be the most photographed castle in the world, and worth the visit for the scenery, but since it was rebuilt from the foundations up in the 1920's, some class it as a folly.
There are many many castles in Scotland worth visiting, the following links will provide several links to each of the above, and give you a view of some of the others. http://scottishculture.about.com/culture/scottishculture/library/blcastlesindex.htm http://www.callycastles.plus.com/ http://www.rampantscotland.com/castles.htm

RiggsSounds great! I'm glad you all replied.
Wurdsmiff, I read Tantallon was closed from the Foot and mouth disease. Arrggg! But thanks for directing me to Dirleton. Wouldn't it be a great life to just wander around and visit every castle ever? I'd like to see Krak de Chevraliers (sp?) but too far!!! What a monster of a building, is there anything left inside or is it just a empty husk of history and memories?
wurdsmiffThat depends on what you mean by an empty husk,

wurdsmiffRiggs, when are you travelling?
Erik SchmidtDefinitely go to the old post that Duncan put up.
I know my list on there is long, but it's hard to pick between them and it will depend on your own tastes.
If you're having trouble locating some of those castles on my list, let me know and I can add location details for you.
Also, you may get better value for your time and money if you don't try and see it all. Concentrate on certain areas and visit more than just the one or two we recommend, such as you seem to be going to do with the Rhein river valley castles.
In Spain for example, you could visit a lot of castles by going from North to South, just West of Madrid, starting at Loarre, Penafiel, Coca, Segovia, Avila, Trujillo....Almonacid de Toledo, Banos de la Encina, Jaen, Granada ....etc. That's just off the top of my head. There are more inbetween and not absolutely in that order.
How long are you going for? My last castle and history trip was 8.5 months. Thus the long list!

Erik

RiggsSorry I didn't respond earlier, blame it on Spring break in Miami.

I'll be leaving in early June and staying for 2 months. It's not as long as I'd like it to be, but I can't figure out yet how to make money and travel.

Erik SchmidtMake money AND travel??!!!!
Do you busk?
What's your budget?
Don't stay in the UK for too long, that's about the most expensive in Europe. Also, stay away from the S coast at that time of year. It gets packed and expensive in July/August. Same with the lakes in N Italy.
Let us know as you formulate plans.

Erik
