CastleChicGordon Eilan Donan cadtle stood in ruinous condition until it's purchase early in the 20th century. The castle as it is now is a complete rebuilding, based on what remianed of the original, which some regard as a folly.
It is it is alleged to be the most photographed castle in the world, and has appeared in many movies.
The castle originated in the 13th century, and portions of the courtyard wall date from that period. Within was built a strong 14th century keep of three storeys and a garret, and parts of the castle are the remains of that.
All of the outbuildings date solely from the reconstruction.
King Alexander 3rd granted the lands to Colin Fitzgerald, son of the Irish Earl of Kildare, as reward for his help in defeating King Hakon of Norway at Largs in 1263. the family adopted the name of Mackenzie.
in 1331 the Randolph Earl of Moray executed 50 men here and placed their heads on the battlement.
The Earl of Huntly captured the castle in 1504, and in 1509 the Macraes were appointed it's constables. It was beseiged by Donald Gorm, a claimant to the title Lord of the Isles in 1539, but he died during the seige.
It was garrisoned by Spanish troops during the Jacobite rebellion of 1719, but was pounded into submission by gunfire from frigates of the Royal Navy.
