maggie I am researching for a book and am looking for information or photos of Stornoway Castle on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland. Thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction. maggie
Gordon From Martin Coventry's castles of Scotland, 3rd edition, Goblinshead 2001 ISBN 1 899874 27 5 Hardback. No pics I'm afraid.
In Stornoway, under the ferry pier, Stornoway Harbour. Nothing remains.
An early castle here, possibly dating from the 11th century, is said to have been seized from the MacNicol family by a Norseman called Leod, from whom the Macleods were descended. The castle was captured by the Gordon Earl of Huntly
in 1506, but succesfully held out against the Campbell Earl of Argyll in 1554. It was destroyed by Cromwell's forces in 1653, although the garrison of his nearby small fort are said to have been massacred by the islanders. The last vestiges of the castle were removed in 1852, and Lews Castle, a 19th c mansion is not built on the site.

I will hunt this book up, though a pic would be lovely. Even of the surrounding area. Hard to write about a place you cannot picture in your mind. maggie
