What do others think of the colouring ?
Shelly Pink castles come under the heading of "interesting". he should have stayed with the whitewash or the original grey-just my opinion.
I think I like this better.

Gordon We've actually discussed harling before, and there are several examples of it being
pink(ish) in Scotland. I remember Levan commenting that his place looks pink at dusk due to the sandstone used in the mix.
Craigievar and Fyvie can also take on reddish hues dependant upon light conditions. I'm all for it when the restoration work is serious enough to take account of the original state of the building, and some attempt has been made to recreate the original appearance. Having said that, bare stone also has it's attractions, though is not a great help in poor weather.
The harling of the great hall at Stirling was also highly controversial, and at the time of our previous discussion I posted some pictures in the photo archive to show the before and after. The problem is that for the vast majority of the public the new colour is completely foreign to their perception of how the castle should look, and in Stirlings case, only part of the castle was treated in this way. Going from a smoke blackened building on top of a similarily coloured volcanic stack which blended with it very sympathetically enhancing it's age, to having a brilliantly bright custard coloured building in pristine condition, was just too much for some.

Peter Some years ago I had discussion with a friend of mine regarding a certain name for a castle site .. that being 'Cob Castle'.
Of which there is one in Cheshire.
Would a castle of this nature (if this is what the name implies ?), be left its original yueky colour. Or would it be painted\washed with a basic colour to present a somewhat better face to the world.
So many things are being discovered regarding the early\middle medieval period. Which points to a much brighter era than we have previously thought.
With there being much sandstone in Cheshire, would our 'Cob Castle' have been pink ?
