ipfloNear Kaliningrad (once Königsberg and capital of eastern Prussia) was once a castle named Friedrichstein, it is now destroyed (the russians have blowned it up, i read some where), but does any know where i can find more info on the history (was it built in the middle ages and who were the owners) and pics and so on? Also near Kaliningrad was once Neuhausen Castle. Does this castle still exist? And does any one know where i can find info and pics on this castle. Thanking in advance

ipflo

Peter EsserHi ipflo,

Friedrichstein seems to be easy: It was property of the Dönhoff family. Marion Gräfin (Countess) Dönhoff, she is a well known old lady in germany, was editor of the magazine "Die Zeit". In her book "A youth in East-Prussia" she described her life on Friedrichstein. Today she is about ninety years old, but - I suppose - still writing.

It is in our book shelf, I’ll be going to look after it.

Peter EsserHi ipflo,

in Marion Dönhoffs book I found this Photo of the Friedrichstein Schloss:

Here you find brief history of the Koenigsberg Schloss (in German, but I guess you didn’t ask for that one):
http://www.provinz-ostpreussen.de/koenigsberg/index.html

The Family of Marion Gräfin Dönhoff was owner of Friedrichstein for centuries, a photograph of the countess (and a german biographie): http://www.provinz-ostpreussen.de/ostpreussen/ospers_doenhoff.html#kopfzeile

Some words about her in English - a laudatio: http://www.bham.ac.uk/german/laudatio.html

ipflothx for the pic of friedrichstein. it is interesting to know that such a lady has lived in this schloss

about neuhausen castle, i have founded out that this castle was a residence of the dukes of prussia, but more i still don't know
