from: castles in britain and ireland ------------------tarbuck does anyone have any info on caergwle castle in north wales please ipflo this ruin castle stands inside earthworks, probably of iron age origin. the stonework concsisted of an enclosure with flanking towers. recent excavations disclosed freestanding buildings in the enclosure, including what appears to have been a blacksmith's workshop. one report says the enclosure had the feel of a builder's yard. caergwrle's existence was short, from construction in the late thirteenth century to abadonment in the 1330's'. As Caergwrle is about 10-mins away from me by car.
I also worked on the dig there some years ago. What was uncovered was a baking oven. But what has never really been pinned down, is the entrance over the ditch.
The back part of the castle is missing (overlooking todays main-road), as this was mined away for millstones.
There is a local battle going on to stop building work being carried out on the field approaching the castle. The site does lie within an early iron-age fort. The defenses of which formed part of the castles outer defenses.AJR Try the following website

i was very interested to hear that you live so near the castle and also took part in the excavation.
I live on the wirral and discovered the castle quite by accident while perusing an ordinance survey map looking for any places of interest on the wrexham-bidston railway line.Its only a short journey for me by train and ive really fallen in love with the castle - i usually make a reasonable walk of it from station, up the hill to the castle (dream awhile!!) then walk on to hope station and catch the train back.
i have managed to glean some info from wrexham so i do know a brief background to the castle but would love to knowmore details regarding its history and layout.
ive also managed to get hold of a booklet about the dig written by the gent who organised it. only hope i interpreted his sketches etc correctly - are there any books out there that you can recommend? there didnt seem to be anything at wrexham library when i visited nor at chester. would flint library have anything do you think.
theres so much thats puzzling about the castle itself. for example, i can see from the dig booklet where the garderobes were but there seems no evidence of a passage into the room from the tower which it presumably served. also are the grooves on the stones at the base of the doorway int the guardroom of any significance.
what was it like on the dig? how long did it take. was it like you see on time team - digging trenches etc!!! are there any plans for another one.
i was amazed to find nothing at all about the castle in caergwle itself, but i suppose its just out of fashion at the moment and it doesnt seem to attract many visitors -all i saw last time i was there was a solitary rabbit hopping around in the south tower!!! what would prince daffydd have said about that!!!

had a look through all my gear, and there isn't much more on Caergwle than you have.
As to your other questions .. drop me an e-mail sometime. As I'm not up to typing tonnes of stuff here on the site, that would be mainly personal thoughts.
