The estate was then given to Sir John Ballenden. On a rock 45m above the North Esk are ruins of a 16m long and 6.6m wide main block divided at ground level into three cellars. A wing starts at a higher level because of the rise in the ground. In the late 17th century Sir William Purvis took material from this building (later known as Old Woodhouselee) to repair the old tower of Fulford, which was later extended and became known as Woodhouselee. This latter mansion was demolished in 1965 except for a later stable court.
