Does any know where I can find pictures of Dangan Castle, the birthplace of Arthur Wellesley, duke of Wellington. Thanks in advance This link notes an ancient book which contains an illustration. This last link confirms Dangan as Wellington's childhood home, but his birthplace as Mornington House, Dublin. http://www.compapp.dcu.ie/~humphrys/FamTree/Scotland/colley.html ------------------ [This message has been edited by Gordon (edited 03-17-2003).] Unfortunately i can't see if it is of poor quality, i only got a redcross but thx anyway It isn't sure where Wellington is borne (they also aren't sure which date): some say Mornington House in Dublin, others say Dangan Castle Taken from Sir Lesley Stephen & Sir Sidney Lee (eds.), Dictionary of National Biography: from the earliest times to 1900 (London, Oxford University Press, 1949). Arthur Wellesley was fourth son of Garrett Wellesley, first earl of Mornington by Anne, eldest daughter of Arthur Hill, viscount Dungannon. He was born in 1769, less than four months before Napoleon. There is some doubt about the exact date and place of his birth. His mother gave 1 May as his birthday, and he himself so kept it, but the nurse affirmed that he was born on 6 March at Dangan Castle, co. Meath. The registry of St. Peter's Church, Dublin, shows that he was christened there on 30 April 1769, and the May number of ‘Exshaw's Gentleman's Magazine’ has: ‘April 29. The Countess of Mornington of a son.’ The ‘Dublin Gazette’ of 2-4 May dates the event ‘a few days ago, in Merrion Street.’ On the whole the evidence points to 29 April, and to 24 Upper Merrion Street, Dublin. He signed himself ‘Arthur Wesley’ till May 1798, when he adopted the form ‘Wellesley.’ also see the great biography of Richard Holmes about Wellington (which i am now reading and that's why i started this topic): no, i also noticed the applet, that isn't the problem, it was just the picture i couldn't get. ------------------ Better to say, 'Here it is.' than 'Here it was.' i really don't know what the problem was, but does it still matter, i gott the picture ipflo Hi Gordon http://www.postaprint.co.uk/cgi-bin/pptmdbr.pl?parms=IRELAND.BARTLETT
Dangan is second bottom, click on the box in the image column.
Poor quality I admit, but all I could get, other than confirmation that the castle is now gone.
