Dorothy Davies can anyone help with information on Fotheringay castle, Northamptonshire, birthplace of Richard III of England? I understand the castle no longer exists but would like at least an approximate idea of its size and capacity to help me with the book I am writing about Richard III. I guess it was a standard castle with moat, etc and towers, but apart from that - any help would be appreciated.

Peter The earthworks do remain at Fortheringay castle, also a section of walling down by the river. This walling is only a piece that has rolled down the slope. If I recall correctly, I have a reconstruction drawing of it somewhere. Will see if I can find it for you.

what do you think of the coincidence of Dan Cruikshank discussing castles on BBC last night and then David Starkey on Channel 4 doing the Monarchy series, mentioning castles!!!!

If you do have the reconstruction drawing, it would be great, otherwise I will take a chance on it being a 'conservative' castle, nothing different, castle building appeared to follow a pattern anyway. I guess it was very secure or Mary Queen of Scots would not have been held there. I would like to know what it was like as a family home when Richard III was a young boy there.
Dorothy Davies I have found a small but good 'reconstruction' picture of Fotheringay castle on the Richard III Society website which gives me a good indication of what it was like, quite impressive, actually. I wonder if the Society would swap links with you so Castle Quest people can see it?

It's all very well to say Richard was born in Fotheringay castle, but where did he play, roam about, learn to ride, now I can see where it all happened and it's a great help. I really do appreciate it.
Dorothy Davies as a follow up, 'Caithness', I am bidding for a limited edition paperweight made in Caithness to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Richard III's coronation. I think I am in with a good chance of getting it. Surprising how these things link to one another, a Caithness link for the Fotheringhay reconstruction drawing and then the paperweight comes up for sale.
