------------------ ------------------ [This message has been edited by Peter (edited 02-15-2005).]LostGirl I'm doing a history paper on my etnic background and my grandfather told me that my grandmother is from the MacClane clan. i'm not exactly sure if that's how you spell it but i do know that there is an Earl in the family and that he/she either owns/used to own the castle Duarte in scotland. I would very much appreciate any information on this castle and/or my family. My family immagrated here in the mid to late 1700's.

It was sold to the Guthrie family in 1875, but in 1911 was acquired by Sir Fitzroy MacLean, 10th Baronet of Duart, who restored and re-occupied the next year.
Before that at some point in the 1680's the MacLeans seem to have recovered their lost castle, and they held it against the Campbells until 1692 when Sir John MacLean went into exile in France. The castle was garrisoned by Hanovarian troops during the 1745 rebellion and in 1748 was surveyed and reported that for £1,500 worth of repairs it could be used as a barracks.
This is quite an extensive and interesting site and still occupied today
