JamesLancasterHi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me? I am trying to findout whether Portland Castle had a twin fortification built in or around Henry VIII's reign? I was told it did but I can find no mention of any other battery or fortification on Portland.

Many thanks.

AJRSandsfoot Castle across the bay was used in tandem with Portland Castle, although there was a castle here before the reign of Henry VIII. Being from Southampton, I suspect you will have no difficulty locating this.
Best regards
JamesLancasterExcellent - thanks for the reply.

Curious why you say that a castle already existed at Sandsfoot before Portland was built. Appreciate Sandsfoot may have been completed slightly earlier than Portland, but everything I have read always infers they were designed as a pair.
AJRI stand corrected on that. While Portland Castle was built in 1541, Sandsfoot Castle was built in 1539. A Knight is correct in that it was built in the same era.

There is another castle on Portland, which I forgot about - Rufus Castle or Bow and Arrow Castle, whic DOES have earlier origins. Sorry for the confusion
