Paul.JAS13 I have just finished visiting each of the remaining castle sites in Merioneth, North Wales and would welcome any information on the site at Oakley Arms (SH 661406). It is listed by King as a possible motte and its physical appearance would suggest a motte and small bailey, but its location, on what is the flood plain of the neighbouring river, seems dubious for a defensive fortification. Any history of the location or views on whether it is a genuine motte would be much appreciated. Thanks, John Paul Hello John,It appears that Oakley arms will remain a mystery as there is so little evidence
at the site that would point to there ever being a motte and bailey castle there.
JAS13 Thanks for your reply Paul. I managed to get very close to the site and the remains were quite significant. The mound is capped by the shell of a square stone building (not medieval probably 19th/early 20th century) and it sits on the eastern end of an oval bailey like platform that extends west for approx 30 metres. I found the site extremely fascinating as it has all the indications of a small motte and bailey in what is clearly a strategic spot guarding the bridge over the Afon Dwyryd and the route down to Harlech from Porthmadog and Criccieth. Yet there is obviously modern interference which confuses the picture, so I agree that, unless any archaeological excavation takes place, this site will remain a mystery. Paul Do you have any photographs John?
I would really like to see them if you have any.
It is a site that demands further investigation.
Regards Paul.JAS13 Yes Paul I have about 10, unfortunately they are not digital. I can try and scan them and e-mail them to you, or as I still have the negatives get copies and post them. Let me know which you would prefer. Thanks, John Paul I have e-mailed you on the subject of photos.
Cheers,
Paul.
