JAS13 Having visited just about every recorded and remaining castle site in North Wales I was intrigued to read about the above and even more intrigued when I visited it. Now I am trying to collate some documentary evidence and would welcome some help!
Brynffanigl Ucha is the remains of an obscure earthwork castle that lies 4 miles inland from Abergele on the North Wales coast. On the Castles of Wales website John Northall provides a good account of the site, but when I visited earlier this year I stumbled across another earthwork on the opposite side of the road. I have shared my findings and photos with Mr Northall who agrees that this seems to be a later motte and bailey castle.
Has anyone visited this site or have any other information in addition to the Castles of Wales website article? As the site is attributed to Ednyfed Fychan the chancellor of Llywelyn ap Iorwerth I would also be interested to learn of his estates and holdings in the North Welsh coastal region, particularly if he held any other castles in addition to this and the site at Bryn Euryn. Peter Having wandered about Flintshire (and Clwyd!) and its boundries for about 30-years, I do have an extensive file on the area.
Sadly I haven't done much with it for a few years. But there certainly seems to be several suspected sites missing from the information on CoW. There are also several more that sites that need a closer look.
When we were Clwyd, and the Arch. side was under John Manley. They did supply me with excellent 'on the ground' information in the shape of comp. printouts etc.
Some of these lesser and unknown sites I have investigated with my good friend Steve Sneyd, from Yorkshire.
Are they castle sites?
Well ... that is of course left to perhaps more learned people. But I always feel that lacking any written evidence ... one opinion is maybe as good as another.
I'll dig that dusty information out.

JAS13 Thanks Peter, if you would like a few photos of the site I can e-mail them to you. I believe that CPAT did some work at the original site over the road and am awaiting some details back from them, but this second site is unmarked on any map and is yet more defined and looks more like a motte and bailey.
