Yours Chris www.castleuk.net JAS13 Fordhall is a large ringwork castle discovered in the mid 1970s near Market Drayton in North Shropshire (OS 127 SJ 650326). Does anyone have any details of its origin or history, particularly considering its close location to Tyrley Castle? Thanks, John. castleuk Hi John
Fordhall Castle is listed in M, Jackson's
Castles of Shropshire, page 25. The site is possibly "Moretoin" mentioned in 1215 or "Matefelun" mentioned in 1195, when William de Botterall was granted permission to fortify a house at Matefelun.
The castle location website.Peter Michael Jackson book 'Castles of Shropshire' (printed about the same time as Mike Salters's) also gives some good information on the site. Though about the same in historic details.
PeterPaul There is a short description of the castle here http://homepage.mac.com/philipdavis/English%20sites/3110.html
Paul.
