Probably the only remaining castle within Paisley is Crookston Castle, which lies on hill above the bank of the river Levan about 3 miles south of Paisley centre. The castle is 12th century or earlier and belonged to Robert de Croc. In the following century it passed to the Stewarts until the murder of Darsiley (1567). Changing hands several times it passed to the Montrose family. Crookston, was originally neither in Glasgow or Paisley but mid-way between the two. However, it's historical links with Paisley are stronger as the castle's owner was also linked with Paisley Abbey. We thought that it would be in Paisley, Scotland, but cannot find any information. Any help would be appreciated. puzzler25 I think we found our answer... It seems like the Abbey is the "castle" we are looking for. If anyone else has any other information, it would be appreciated. Aiken Drum There were many fortified houses and castles in that area, perhaps the most notable being Stanely Castle, which stands in the middle of the town's main reservoir.
How could you mistake the abbey for a castle? It is an obviously ecclesiastical structure, very church like.Paul Paisley Abbey official website. Levan Crookston Castle Aiken Drum Isn't Crookston in Glasgow? AJR Yes, it is. See http://www.castleduncan.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=1250 for details Aiken Drum Seen that thanks, maybe someone should get that guy to do a bit on Stanely too! Levan Crookston is now on the outskirts of Glasgow; but then Glasgow Airport is in Paisley! Aiken Drum Just teasing. AJR See here for Stanely Castle. http://www.castleduncan.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=1421&pid=18515&st=0entry18515 bossjock I suspect that the 'Paisley Castle' in question might be Blackhall Mansion which is located in Cathcart Crescent, just off of Barrhead Road (A726) in the Hunterhill district of Paisley, about 1 Mile ESE of the town centre.
Blackhall Mansion lay in ruins for all of living memory at least, untill it was bought and rebuilt about 1990 (?). It has a good history and more info can be found on it here -
