In wealthier families (at least in central europe), it was not uncommon to divide the goods, castles and rights between two sons. Even the title. Already the merovingian (5th-8th century) and carolingian kings (8th-10th century) divided their kingdoms to give a crown to every son. Maria There was a fifth option...
