------------------auachmann Where were the cemeteries located? I am especially interested in 12th century castles. As I understand it, some castles were rather crowded in area within their walls.
ChatelainPeter Burials were not normally located within the area of a castle. Don't forget there were churches even before the Normans arrived in the U.K. From prehistoric times there existed holy places for burials. Be they or be they not Christian.
Many churches today are placed near old castle sites. So whilst the castle did not survive, the church most certainly did. Even the worst of Barons hedged his bets and looked after a church/abbey/ monastery, so that his soul would not go to hell. Merlin Wealthy noblemen of the 12th century (and later) founded new abbeys on their grounds to have a place for burial for themselves and all later family-members. The donators were often represented in the wall-paintings in the churches or chappels in those abbeys. They did not have do be next to the castle.
