"For the first time in nearly 500 years, historian Juliet Barker (author of the definitive book on tournaments) and historical combat expert Mike Loades ( Weapons That Made Britain ), bring to life one of the deadliest spectacles of the Middle Ages: an authentic medieval jousting tournament. The current image of medieval jousting has more to do with the influence of Hollywood movies than historical fact. By stripping away the fake from the real, the programme paints an accurate picture of this famous contest. Consulting 500-year-old manuscripts and using authentic weapons and made-to-measure armour, Juliet and Mike unravel the secrets of how real knights trained and fought. The Tournament follows the fortunes of four modern would-be knights as they attempt to become the real thing. A prize-winning horse rider and trainer from Scotland, an army major, a mounted policeman from the US and a cowboy from Montana: they are all skilled horsemen but how will they react to the challenge before them? Competition and rivalry increase over the course of The Tournament , culminating in a final dramatic joust, with genuine solid lances, at Pembroke Castle in Wales, home to many great tournaments in the Middle Ages. Dir: Nicolas Brown; Exec Prod: Alex West; Prod: Iain Taylor; Prod Co: Wall to Wall" ------------------Levan Did anyone see the UK Channel 4 staging of a mediaeval tournament on Sunday night? I understand the programme put a lot of effort into historical acuracy - even to the point of using genuine 500 year old rules. Here's the description from Ch 4 website: Dorothy Davies No, I didn't see it but am gratified to see channel 4 making a real effort. The C4 news coverage of the excavation of Bosworth was a shambles and I have written a formal letter of complaint (which remains unanswered)in thatt they used half a dozen re enactment people to stage the battle behind the archeologist, as well as leading with the RIII film which everyone now knows is false from start to finish! Merlin Peter started this topic alreday 2 days ago in the "general discussion"-forum under the title "More knights!"...
Have to say that it is no new TV-production - I saw it already about a year ago on "Arte".deborahknowles I saw it and thought it was excellent. It showed you the danger they faced even when not bashing each other with their lances.
