The site is a wooded south facing slope above a pond.
Any suggestions for starting?
duncan Not knowing your skill level of construction i'll start at the very first. No disrepect if i offend by accident.
Transfer all measurments to paper and find a suply of wooden or metal stakes with a nice size hand sledge to drive them with. Use a ribbon type tape to mark the grades of the footing and prepare to get dirty after this point.
jsmith4973@aol.com Thank you, Duncan. We expect to use a lot of graph paper before we get to the shovels. Right now we have 25 inched of snow on the site.
I've done a fair amount of carpentery, and I have a lot of books, but I've done little masonry. We will probably do a modular wooden structure with a masonry veneer. What's that stuff they spray onto swimming pools? Gunnite? I wonder if it's any good for the outside of a model castle.

duncan Go back to the Building Your Own Castles forum and set your browser to all. It will take a bit of reading to go through the posts but something will spark your interest i'm sure. Gunnite is only one option of many that has been discussed in the past and you might find others that will be better for you. Give it a try and let me know what you come up with.
duncan Whoops, let me add the Building Blocks forum which might have something also. I've seen gunnite used on buildings but the only draw back is that the prep work was more time consumeing then other types of constructon. It's so porus that some sort of an outer finish would have to be applied which could be the ashler {or ashlar} rock.
