emmypoo hey everyone! well my school totally transforms the school for senior prom and this year our theme is medieval europe and im in charge of turning the lobby of the gym into a courtyard. any suggestions, money is not a factor-i just need ideas as to what courtyards were like, looked like etc.
please help make my senior prom memorable-im pressed for time!
Erik Schmidt Coutyards varied a lot. Basically they were simply the space left between the buildings and walls around it, so the type of structures surrounding the courtyard would determine it's looks.
Are you intending to replicate a castle courtyard specifically, or are you open to options.
What part of Europe?

build, paint or decorate castle elements, perhaps in front of a black background – install some dia-projectors with a dia show of real castles - perhaps look for humoristic solutions like changing the caretakers office into a gateway - dont forget costumed people - build elements like columns, romanic or gothic windows, doors - much can be achieved with light effects - dont’t forget medieval or renaissance music, and, and, and …

emmypoo thanks for your help. im not looking for any courtyard in particular but i know that our entrance is a castle in germany although i forget the name of it. so more or less what you're saying is that we should make the floor look grassy and the walls look like the walls of the castle (that would surround the courtyard)? we have an area about 25 x 50 feet so we need things to take up that area. columns are a good idea and we will include murals also. i saw in a picture online a fountain in one courtyard, is that a good idea? just for reference, this is the area just before the gym (which will be the abbey-were there abbeys in castles?) anyway, thanks again!
AJR There were certainly chapels within castles. Courtyards could contain anything - fountains, trees, etc. I have a couple of pictures (b/w) of the courtyard of Skipton Castle. Unfortunately they are too big to place in the Castle Photo Archive, but I'll e-mail to you as they may provide some inspiration.
