In my youth, my parents took me to Europe on two occassions, where we traveled through France, Switzerland, and other small but quaint countries. Sincerely, chosing a lesser and smaller castle and keeping your scale down would certainly help. A local chap built a fantasic model of our local Flint castle some years ago. Yet the main keep is only 6" inches high.Magellan Dear Castle Quest,
The intrigue, and mysteries behind these marvels of architecture and engineering, have fascinated me for decades, that I have been determined to build my own scale model of a castle.
So far I have tried different methods and choices of mediums; however, the models I build, despite the complements, and seemingly endless conversations, my efforts soon to turn to ruins...collapsing walls, the towers I build sem to lean, and fall away from the walls.
I am sure that it has to do with the layout of each stone (which I am now making out of clay).
Could you please direct me to a site as to where I can find how the builders of these castles layed the stones for optiminum support of the walls for the turrets and wall-walks...etc.
Peter FreidinMerlin Medieval builders used binding stones: Large stones that connected the walls of the differnet buildings on differnet heights. If there are no binding stones between two buildings of a castle, you usualy can be sure that they are not from the same time-period. Peter I think the two main fctors would be;
what scale are you using ?
and which castle are you modeling from ?Magellan
Thank You, The advice given, as well as the methods used are very helpful.
The castle I am planning on making is one of my own design, and though it will be mainly for decoration, I am going to try and have it dispalyed, at the next art show for the disabled and handicapped of my home state...now if any of you should have any ideas how to make a working draw bridge and gate, with out having to actually disturb the model itself.
