CubsFan I have this project, and I want to trace the development of castles in England, but I can't really find examples besides Skipton that I know what category they fall into. Or what came first. Mott and bailey, then I suppose something along the lines of Scarborough then Skipton, but that's about as much as I can make of it. Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks

However be warned. People like to make complex subjects simple. Castles are not like cars, with a new model every few years. Motte and bailey and other earthwork castles were built whenever a cheap, quick castle was needed. In England the first castles were probably mottes built about 1060, but after the Conquest by William the First stone castles were built at the same time as other motte castle were being built. These early castle had square towers (Tower of London http://www.hrp.org.uk/tol/indextol.htm , Colchester http://www.camelotintl.com/heritage/castles/colche.html ) or Rectangular Hall Keeps (Richmond http://www.camelotintl.com/heritage/castles/richmo.html , Chepstow http://www.castlewales.com/chepstow.html ). Round towers and keeps started to be built in the late 1100's, but mottes were still being built, as were square towers and keeps. Enclosure castles were generally later but Framlingham http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~mwcook/framlingham%20castle.html is an early example of an enclosure castle.
The simple answer to your project would be that almost all types of castle were built at almost all late medieval periods and that there is no general developement of the English castle. However, there are some important trends which are worth studying.
