medievalprincessI need to build a model of a Welsh castle, and it must be made to scale.I just wanted to know how big a standard Welsh castle was (how many feet by how many feet).
LevanTry the Castles of Wales site - it has lots of information: http://www.castlewales.com/home.html

The following sites have plans of Welsh castles that include dimensional information:

The Castles of Britain:

Harlech http://www.castles-of-britain.com/castle42.htm

Beaumaris http://www.castles-of-britain.com/castle43.htm

Conwy http://www.castles-of-britain.com/castle41.htm

Philip Davis' "Castellarium Philippis" has lots of plans including:

Caernarfon http://www.castlesontheweb.com/members/philipdavis/Plans/album/pages/caernarfon_gif.htm

Chepstow http://www.castlesontheweb.com/members/philipdavis/Plans/album/pages/chepstow_jpg.htm

Conwy http://www.castlesontheweb.com/members/philipdavis/Plans/album/pages/conwy_gif.htm

Incidentally, there is a cut-out book with a model of Caernarfon Castle:
Cut and Assemble a Medieval Castle by A. G. Smith ISBN: 0486246639

There, that should get you started!

Philip DavisOne of the great thing about castles is that they are all different, so there is no standard size. A great many welsh and english castles were small motte and baileys, perhaps as large as 50 meters by 30 meters. The great royal welsh castles, which are now world heritage sites, are all large for castles. Caernarfon is about 200 by 50 m, Harlech 80 by 70 m plus an outer bailey of a similer size. Beaumaris is about 120 by 100 m. Jeff Thomas's Castles of Wales site is the place to go, but the groundplans at my site are probably better if you need to download the plans for inclusion in printed work.
