------------------ ------------------ Medieval Town Plans Found nothing specific about either of the sites you mentioned, though the follwing article again found through Brittanica details the role of the medieval town in England, and the reference list at it's foot may be worth exploring. http://www.britannica.com/bcom/magazine/article/0,5744,7397,00.html ------------------ Gordon.Beaumaris Hello, I am writing a term paper (25 pages) on the subject of the development of towns around castles and how this development reflects an overall shift from castles as passive defense to castles as active defense. What I really am looking for is images of the towns surrounding Arundel and Beaumaris, the older the better. I have a few modern day images (although nothing great) but I was ideally looking for some old town plans with the town in relation to the castle. I know they are out there, but I have not been able to locate what I am looking for. I have a vast research library at my disposal, so they dont have to be internet links. Thanks in advance. Philip Davis A plan of Beaumaris of 1610 by John Speed is featured in the CADW guidebook for Beaumaris castle. This guide lists amoung it's pricipal sources E.A. Lewis, The Mediaeval Boroughs of Snowdonia (London 1912) and C. M. Evans, 'The Medieval Borough of Beaumaris, 1200-1600' (unpublished MA thesis in library of University College of North Wales, Bangor). Get back to me if you are unable to find Speed's map and I'll send you a scan.

Also, can you recommend any other texts which might discuss the relation between the town and the castle? Thanks. Philip Davis The scan I'll send on as soon as I can get my scanner to work. As for other texts nothing really springs to mind. Pehaps someone else has ideas?
