mikeb I am doing a report for my french class on the differences in french chateaus from other castles. Can anyone explain the differences or direct me to a website where this is talked about.I am 13yrs. Thank you
Merlin Sorry, but there's no simple answer to your question. It already took us weeks of discussion here on CQ to come to the conclusion that there are no exact definitions for terms like 'castle', 'chāteau', 'burg' or 'schloss' that everyone can accept.

Like 'castle' in english, 'chāteau' seems to be a term that is used for medieval fortifications as well as for luxurious residences built in our time. But if the specification 'chāteau fort' is used, this normaly means a medieval structure (like Chāteau Gaillard etc.) and not a chāteau in the style of the famous renaissace-castles of the Loire-Valley (like Chambord etc.).
So please let us know if you need information about the different tendencies of castlebuilding in the middleages or if you want to compare french renaissance-chāteaux with buildings of the same period in other kingdoms.
