Something is not clear. Do you want to know about the castles as they were then or as it is done now? Erikcastlefreak I am doing a project on alternative housing. I just need to know what types of energy castles use, if there is anything to do with the insulation in them or how they are lit, anything would be helpful. Thank you!!! As for insulation, I don't know of any castle which had insulation built into it's structure(such as an air space in the wall). Some insulation was produced against the cold walls by hanging them with tappestries.
The walls had great thermal mass, which meant they were slow to change temperature due to their thickness, which also made the rooms slow to change temperature.
Candles, oil/fat lamps and open fires were used for lighting.
