Since the Vikings specialised in surprise attacks by sea, there would be obvious advantages and disadvantages dependant upon whether you were a Viking or not.

I am assuming you mean the best place for a castle to be safe from Vikings.
You have to realize that those who built castles did so on the land they controlled/owned. You had to find the best place to put it within your area, you couldn't just head for the hills and build your castle there if this land was not yours to control.
Also, castles were often put in strategic places, such as next to a watercourse to allow the lord to control the traffic and levy taxes, so the choise of the site was not always down to safety.
Which brings me to another point. The castle existed to control the land and the people on it. So, therefore, if the vikings arrived you had to fight to control that land, if you didn't, and just hid in the castle safely up in the hills, the vikings would happily rape, pillage and burn unhindered, which would remove any local support for you to remain lord, or worse still, the vikings may settle your land and take your place.
