Matt12345 Hi, i'm kinda new to this. I'm a freshman in highschool, and i've got a project due in June, but need some facts on castles now. Does anyone know any good sites for info on a castle's defenses, best location, living conditions, etc. of a castle around the times when Charlmagne ruled? I need 25-30 facts on notecards (1 per notecard, not too hard ) by Friday. Any help would be great! Thanks
Erik Schmidt This a period I know little about, but I can tell you that castles did not begin to be built from stone until at least the late 900's.
In fact, Charlemange(c. 742 - 814), may well predate the castle in the strict meaning of the term.

You are unlikely to find a great deal of 'facts' from the period you want to cover, especially realting to castles.
Matt12345 Oh okay, i must be mistaken about the charlemagne part then. My class watched a video not too long ago about castles, and cathedrals, etc. I thought they built them when Charlemagne was still around, but it must have been a little while after his son's took over.

black dragon hi, i have to make a medieval european castle, but i can't find any good pics of one. PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP ME OUT PLEASE???????????????

Merlin Matt12345: There have been castles in the time of Carolus the Great (Charlemagne), but they were not what you would describe as a proper medieval castle. There have alredy been fortifications with ditches and palisades as one type, and another type were old roman fortifications beeing reused as castles. But the common nobleman of the 7th to the early 9th century lived in a 'curtis': a village with a representative, mostly unfortified big house as its centre.
Black Dragon: Just go to the Photo Archive linked bellow, or have a look at the many floorplans and endless series of pictures at http://www.burgenwelt.de where you should click on ,Burgen' and then on a country you're interested in.

When you find a plan or castle you like, try the search engine at; http://www.google.com/
to find more pages about that castle. It even has a picture search function.
There are a lot of good pictures of castles on the web so you shouldn't have a problem once you decide which one.
